How to Avoid Panic Attacks
It’s better to avoid panic attacks in the first place than to try
to stop one once it starts. Although it may not happen right away, you can reduce or even eliminate the chance
of having a panic attack in the future.
As I’ve said elsewhere, be sure to see your doctor to make sure your symptoms aren’t from a
physical problem. Once you’ve done that, here are some ways to reduce the chance of getting another panic
attack.
Learn About Panic Attacks
A good way to reduce you chance of a panic attack is to learn more about them, like you’re doing
on this site.
Knowledge has power.
As you learn about panic attacks and how common they are and the underlying causes, as well as
their physiology, panic episodes lose some of their fearfulness.
It’s one thing to feel your heart pounding and think you’re having a heart attack and are going
to die and never see your family again and…
It’s another to know that your heart is fine (because you passed the stress test with flying
colors) and realize that the pounding pulse is due to your body releasing more adrenaline into your blood stream
than you really need right now.
It’s the same experience, but because of knowledge one instance is horrifying and the other is
more bearable.
Since one of the greatest tensions people with panic attacks have is fear of having another one
(“fear of the fear”), the mindset knowledge produces helps ease tension and stress over all. It therefore reduces
the chance of another panic attack.
Eliminate These Triggers
Another basic step to take to avoid having a panic attack is reducing or preferably eliminated
smoking and caffeine.
Both smoking and caffeine in any form make many people more susceptible to panic attacks. In
some people it’s as if they’re set on a hair-trigger to fall into a panic episode if they’re using either one.
Of the two, it’s usually easier to eliminate caffeine than the smoking, but you should make your
best effort to do both.
Of course you already know that there are a lot of reasons beyond panic attacks to give up
smoking.
