Anxiety Disorders Treatment
Given the stresses in today’s world, we all can use some knowledge of anxiety disorders
treatment. Even someone without full-fledged generalized anxiety as a medical diagnosis can use some of
the non-drug treatment approaches to help successfully manage their worry and stress.

Other pages on this site talk about more formal treatment methods (you might want to check out
Treating Anxiety Disorder). On this page, I’m going to make some suggestions based on an
ancient healing tradition that will help counteract the hectic, wild, tense pace of life today. This is
beneficial in itself, and also any other anxiety disorder treatment you may care to use.
As you read the following section, imagine incorporating some of these suggestions in your life
regularly. Imagine the way that might shift things for you.
Anxiety Disorders Treatment Using
Advice from an Ancient Healing System
Ayurveda is an ancient healing system. It originated in India and predates even Chinese
medicine. Ayurveda remains relevant today as contemporary physicians recognize value in many aspects of this
time-tested approach.
One of the principles of Ayurveda is that we experience the world through our senses and we can
use our senses to influence our body toward healing. On this page I want to apply this approach and mindset to the
treatment of anxiety disorder.
Other pages on this site give other methods of treating both generalized anxiety and panic
attacks, including medical approaches. All of these tools are useful and it’s good to know about them all. After
all, the more choices you have, the more likely you’ll be able find the best combination for your situation.
One of the issues people face today is the fast pace of today’s world and the incredible about
of input coming at them. We tend to be in over-drive all the time.
There nothing wrong with being busy and productive, but it can be destructive if it's our only
mode of operating. We need balance, but many of us have forgotten how to slow down, how to sooth ourselves.
Fortunately, it’s not that hard to relearn it. I’d like to suggest some techniques here using the ayurvedic
principle of involving all the senses.
Sight
Admire the beauty in our physical world, natural and manmade. Take a walk in nature or go to an
art museum. Have a coffee-table book or two filled with images you admire and appreciate. Look for beautiful things
as you go through your day and actively appreciate them.
Hearing
Listening to soothing and calming music is the obvious one here. I also consider listening to
lectures or courses with a positive message as part of using sound to reduce anxiety. The sounds of nature are an
“organic” source of soothing sound. Who doesn’t relax to the sound of ocean waves or birdsong? Of course, we all
don’t live at the beach, but we can appreciate nature where we are. And miniature fountains allow everyone to have
the sound of a mountain creek in their home. Although not my first choice, you can even use recording of
nature.
Taste
Actively enjoy your food. Ayurveda recommends specific types of food, flavors and spices for
different personality types and conditions. You don’t need to go into that detail to savor your food and enjoy the
sensation of taste. Too many people gulp their food while their attention is elsewhere. Instead, find a perfect
apple and enjoy each bit. Get a small piece of excellent chocolate and savor it. Play with herbs and spices when
you cook.
Touch
Enjoy touching and being touched. Part of ayurvedic practice is a daily self-massage using
sesame oil. That’s a wonderful practice but not necessary. You can just enjoy the sensation of massaging your scalp
as you shampoo your hair, or get a full body massage. Enjoy the textures in the world around us, the feelings of
soaking in a warm bath, the delight of petting an animal, the softness of a cashmere sweater.
By the way, I think it’s worth splurging on cashmere if only for this reason. My mother was a
master of this. Every few year she would buy a high quality cashmere sweater and she would wear them regularly. As
they gradually became worn, she went from wearing them as part of her dressier outfits to more casual ones to
eventually wearing her more worn cashmere sweaters as she did her chores around the house. She made the most of
that little luxury.
Scent
Aromatherapy has become part of popular awareness, and I’ve heard that stores use aromas to
stimulate buying impulses (OK – that may be an urban legend, but it could be true. It certainly is true that scent
is part of the sensual landscape. Make enjoyable scents part of your landscape. Stay with natural scents, not
artificial “air fresheners. Enjoy the scent of a freshly peeled orange, visit a bakery. Even if you don’t bake
yourself, boil a cinnamon stick and cloves in some water on the stove. Use aromatherapy oils.
I hope you can see how regularly applying these methods will improve the quality of your life.
You'll experience more pleasure in your days and develop more appreciation for the good things this world has to
offer. Please give these ideas a try - you deserve to feel better.
